Miroslav Krleža: Letter from Koprivnica

There is a well-known historical episode of the collaboration between Koprivnica's printer and publisher Vinko Vošicki and Miroslav Krleža in publishing “Književna Republika“ (“Literary Republic”) from 1923 to 1925.

Krleža used to visit Vošicki several times regarding the job of preparing the magazine. During one such visit to Koprivnica, his notable essay “Pismo iz Koprivnice“ (“Letter from Koprivnica”) was written.

In “Letter”, Krleža presents his extensive thought process and dazzling picturesque observations of how, instead of going to Vienna (due to the confiscated passport), he had to travel to Koprivnica where it was also possible for him to create and write letters. Moreover, in the mentioned essay, he gives encyclopedic and general analyzes of centuries-old historical layers of the town of Koprivnica. It is also worth mentioning that, in the part of the essay inspired by the poems written by Fran Galović in his Kajkavian collection “Z mojih bregov”, Krleža writes about the vineyards of Podravina.

To conclude, we invite you to visit the exhibition “Letter from Koprivnica” which opens on 28 January 2022 in the Koprivnica Gallery.

The program was implemented with European Union funds within the project "Wine folklore as a historical identity of Podravina and Pomurje" (reVITAlize) within the INTERREG V-A cross-border cooperation program Hungary-Croatia 2014-2020.
