Among the most popular objects of popular piety are pictures of saints. In Podravina, they are called kipici or kipeci. The name derives from the fact that large, framed pictures of saints, which are put on walls, are called kipi (statues). Therefore, for thumbnails, a diminutive is being used – kipici (statuettes).
People would usually buy the pictures of saints on pilgrimages and use them as bookmarkers, with prayers being printed on the back of them, which meant they also served as a supplement of the breviary. In addition to the saints and the blessed, the pictures most often depicted the Mother of God and Jesus Christ, various scenes from the Gospels, and allegorical depictions, such as the institution of the Eucharist.
The exhibition presents a selection of about twenty pictures of saints which testify to the role these objects had in the piety of the inhabitants of Podravina. You can visit the opening of the exhibition on 28 January 2022 at 7 pm in the basement of the Koprivnica Town Museum.
The program was implemented with European Union funds within the project "Wine folklore as a historical identity of Podravina and Pomurje" (reVITAlize) within the INTERREG V-A cross-border cooperation program Hungary-Croatia 2014-2020.
